Be a part of what God is doing in Central and South America.

Volunteer as a driver or packer and help bring hope, love, and lasting change to communities in need.

Driving for Distribution

Packing and Sorting

Volunteer Opportunities

There are two key ways you can serve in this mission: by volunteering as a Packer to help prepare the books before distribution, or as a Driver to deliver them. Each role plays a vital part in bringing hope and practical support to communities in Central and South America.

Driving during Distribution

We firmly believe that teaching children moral values will impact a country for God and for the betterment of society. Every child who receives a book will have the opportunity to start a relationship with Jesus that will change their lives. We are amazed at how the Project has grown in only a few short years to millions of books being distributed each year. Please pray about the opportunity to drive during distribution.

More information and details about driving during distribution

Requirements

It is very important that you:

  • Love God and have a desire to share Jesus with the children.
  • Know how to drive a manual transmission pick-up truck.
  • Know how to navigate 4×4 roads or heavy city traffic and be happy to drive between 8 to 12 hours a day.
  • Willingness to communicate through a translator app or by signals for the week if they don’t speak Spanish
  • Do not smoke, drink alcohol, do drugs.
  • Feel ok with very simple accommodations and Latin food.
  • Send your signed waiver form.
  • Complete the donation and take the cash required.
  • Bring an unlocked phone and have a sim card that works in the country you are going to which will be used for communication via WhatsApp and navigation via Waze or Google Maps.

Trip Details

Here are some things that will help prepare you as you come:

  • You’ll be renting a 4 x 4 truck with manual transmission
  • You’ll receive a schedule (when you arrive) that will need some flexibility and grace on your part. Schedule starts around 5 to 5:30 am each morning because schools are only in session from 7 am to 12 or 1 pm and the books need to be delivered while the school is in session. Some mornings the first drop off is a 2 to 3 hour drive away.
  • You’ll take cash that will cover food, fuel, and hotels but remember you’ll be on a budget. As a missionary your budget is geared to local food and hotel choices.
  • You will be driving with a Project Jesus worker each day who will probably not know English or know directions. Depend on the Project worker to help you with the timing and speed you are driving (too fast or too slow). You don’t have to obey them BUT they have a good feel for the route and the road conditions. Some of the Project workers are quite new and this could be their first time in a city, vehicle, or school.
  • You will need a functioning SIM card in the country and WhatsApp working on your phone. In this way, you always be able to get help.
  • Follow your schedule closely to determine how much time you have at the school and communicate any delays with your team leader. Arriving at the warehouse to re-load is particularly important.
  • Project Jesus workers need to take photos at each delivery-part of their employment. Please co-operate and smile!
  • Each evening will be a short de-brief meeting and devotional time at the hotel. Watch for miracles each day! (Bridge out story)
  • Most deliveries are complete around 2-3pm. Your main meal will be in the evening, once your truck is loaded for the next day.
  • Prior to coming, download WhatsApp, Google Translate, Waze, and Google maps. Google Maps will be used to help direct you between schools. Practise using them so you are familiar with them.
  • Pack light – carry on suitcase and backpack – you will be changing hotels during the week, and will need to carry your suitcase in the truck with you.
  • Things to bring with you:
    • A humble heart-they aren’t doing it wrong, just different
    • Patience and grace
    • An unlocked cell phone
  • Drivers that are committed to multiple weeks, the week end is free for you to schedule. Project Jesus commitment will be Sunday to Friday evening.
  • Project Jesus staff are mostly young adults. They are very hard working and fun loving. Distribution is a welcome break from all the phone work they do the rest of the year-contacting teachers 2 times a year is their biggest challenge. They encourage and train teachers in the use of the material.

Driving Tips

Driving in Latin America is like learning a new language, be cautious and alert at all times.

  • Motorbikes: Always at the front when the light turns green AND they drive/pass you on the right. . . OR left to get there!
  • Many vehicles have broken lights OR none at all.
  • There are many good, paved highways with lots of speed bumps-watch for these.
  • As soon as you turn off the paved highway there are trails and roads with ruts and potholes, speed bumps OR deep wash outs.
  • Don’t pass on double yellow lines OR up hill. If you get stopped, trust and rely on your Project worker to negotiate with the police. If there is a fine, the team leader will let you know how much it was.
  • Horn beeping is not road rage. Beep, Beep is a polite, ‘let’s go’ OR ‘I’m here – beside or behind- please don’t hit me.’
  • You will be cut off many times but relax! You’ll need to do the same just to get moving. Edge out cautiously and they will give way to you.
  • Don’t drive faster than you can see ahead. If you can’t see the road ahead, slow down. Pedestrians, cows, broken down or slow trucks might be over the crest of the hill. . . There might not even be a road when you come flying over the top of the hill because it took a sharp right!
  • 4 x 4 recommended on steep hills and through creeks and rivers.
  • Please let us know if you are comfortable with extreme 4 x 4 routes OR would prefer adventure but not extreme!
  • Pedestrians do not have the right of way, so don’t stop traffic for them. They will often cross part way and stand in the middle until traffic clears.

For more information, we can set up a video call with you.

Cost of Trip per week

Each country varies but the average cost is as follows.  Please contact us at projectjesusvolunteers@gmail.com for exact cost information for the country you are interested in.

Offices Locations

Location of the PJFC offices:

During distribution there are several warehouses in each country where different teams will be stationed to lower driving times.  These are the location of our offices in each country.

Costa Rica – International Headquarters: Moravia, San José

Nicaragua: Jinotepe, Carazo

Honduras: Tegucigalpa.

Colombia: Zipaquira, Cundinamarca

El Salvador: San Salvador

Panama: Panama City

Bolivia: Santa Cruz de la Sierra

In this video, you can see what a trip for distribution to any of the countries looks like.

2025 Schedule:

Panama: March 9th to 15th, 2025

El Salvador: March 30th to April 12th, 2025

Colombia: Feb. 22nd to March 8th, 2025

Nicaragua: March 9th to 29th, 2025

Honduras: March 9th to 22nd, 2025

Bolivia: March 30th to April 12th, 2025

COLOMBIA: This is an amazing, large country with breathtaking landscapes, little towns hidden in the mountains, and friendly people.

HONDURAS: Here the 20-50 school principales are called into one place to pick up their books.  The authorities love putting on large thank you activities involving students and teachers.

NICARAGUA:  If you like off road driving, come and try Nicaragua’s rural “roads”.  Challanging and rewarding, this is one country you can’t miss.

COSTA RICA: Want to see Project Jesus up close? Come visit our headquarters, see some schools, and get to know us better.

EL SALVADOR: Since changes were made nation wide, this country is safe and beautiful to travel in. Here the schools are small and by the thousand.

BOLIVIA: This will be the second year we do distribution in Bolivia.  If you like pioneering, and don’t mind a bit of chaos, you will love Bolivia.

PANAMA: In one week, we plan to cover all the rural area of Panama. It’s a small country, but there are lots of schools waiting for their books.

Adventure with a Purpose

In February, March, and April, many adventurous people come to distribute Project Jesus books to public schools.  The groups take the message of Jesus to millions of people, meet teachers and students, see beautiful countryside with some 4x4ing included, cross rivers and lakes on ferries and boats, and eat rice and beans.  Despite the world situation, God’s message will arrive at the schools.

We invite you!

Come take the message of Jesus to public schools on an all-inclusive, 0 star trip to distribute Project Jesus books to rural schools.

Sponsor a driver

Would like to come but can’t for whatever reason?  Sponsor a driver!  There are many adventurous young people who would like to come distribute books but can’t afford it.  You can sponsor one you know or one on our waiting list.

We are to be Jesus’ hands and feet.  What better way than taking books that are 80% scripture to students in public schools?

General information

There is a team leader for each group of 2-5 people as well as prior zoom meetings for preparation and training.

Each Sunday, the rental trucks are picked up in the main city, driven to the logistics base, loaded with the books for Monday.   Because we start strong on Sunday, volunteers might want to arrive to the main city on Saturday to be able to rest from the flight before diving into the week.

The volunteers are always accompanied by Project staff member and all the routes and maps are provided the previous day by the Project central office.  Because the rural school hours are from 7am to 1pm, morning daylight hours are prime time and each team normally leaves the hotel between 5 and 6am, dropping off books at 6 to 10 schools.

The Central Office works with the national staff to provide clear instructions and complete schedules for each driver, who will not be left alone.  They will always be with a Project worker who knows the schedule and area or with their team of volunteers and only a whatsapp call away from the central office.

The drivers are not always stationed at the same hotel. There are some routes that require overnight trips.  We recommend travelling with only a carry-on.

The climate in Central America varies from 20ºC to 40ºC depending on the municipality visited each day.  Acceptable dress code is long shorts (like golf shorts), a t-shirt, and nice sandals.  To be a testimony, all clothing must be decent.  All tattoos should be covered, as well, due to their significance regarding gangs that they imply.  (Tattoos can be dangerous if travelling to El Salvador or Honduras).  Laundry service can be arranged.

Each day, the driver and a Project staff distribute books in a different municipality or province, providing an amazing opportunity to see the country and meet many people.

North American drivers are very, very important to the distribution logistics.  National drivers are not:

  •      available in the numbers needed
  •      dependent to show up every day
  •      skilled enough to drive a truck with a load of books
  •      capable enough to drive the routes in the time required

And on top of this, the novelty of foreign volunteers coupled with the North American cultural to push forward in the face of intimidating odds provide a necessary part of the massive distribution logistics.
